Salvatore Stranieri: The Keeper of the Art of Panari in Girifalco

In the heart of Calabria, nestled among the hills of Girifalco, lives Salvatore Stranieri, a 95-year-old man who embodies the traditions and history of his land. Salvatore is the guardian of an ancient craft: the creation of panari, the traditional wicker baskets that tell the story of rural life and peasant culture in the region. With patience and mastery, he has spent decades weaving fibers collected from the surrounding woods, transforming them into functional objects once used for gathering olives, transporting fruit, or storing everyday items.

His work is not just craftsmanship but a cultural heritage that bridges the past and the present, passed down through generations. Each basket created by Salvatore is a unique piece, showcasing his refined

technique and deep connection with nature. “It’s not just about making a basket,” he says with a proud smile. “Each weave is like a thread that ties the past to the present. It’s my life.”

Through the "Radici e Percorsi" project, Salvatore’s art is not only preserved but celebrated as a vital symbol of Calabria’s cultural heritage. His hands weave not just wicker but also hope and identity, proving that the deep roots of tradition can inspire new pathways. Salvatore’s work is a testament to resilience and love for his homeland, a powerful example for future generations to ensure that ancient traditions are not forgotten but become a driving force to build the future.
